2019-04-28 Jesus in the real world 22: The Real “Man with the Key” Luke 8:22-56 22 One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a […]

2019-04-21 Jesus in the real world 21: Gospel Parables and Gospel Family Luke 8:4-21 4 And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable, 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and […]

The right kind of “Marvel”

Posted on

It is no secret that my family and I are all big fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and TV shows. There are a few of them we don’t like, but to say that we’re excited about the release of Avengers: Endgame this week would be an understatement! Will good triumph over evil? Will Thanos (the bad guy)—as seemingly powerful as he is—get what he deserves? Will we be able to make it three hours without getting up to go to the bathroom? We don’t want to miss a thing, because the story-telling and the visual effects are always […]

Good Friday, Easter, and Dirt

Posted on

We’re celebrating Holy Week this week. The last week of Jesus’ life on earth before He died on the cross on Friday and then rose from the dead on Easter morning. Christians have observed various traditions surrounding this week for centuries. For our purposes this year we’re focusing on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. This Friday at noon, those that are able can join a “mid-town community Good Friday service.” This year we’ll meet across the street at Northminster Presbyterian, and Rev. Richard Jones from St. James United Methodist Church will be sharing the message. Then at 6:55PM Friday evening […]

What is it with women and palm trees?

Posted on

Most of the women in my family love the beach. I mean love it. I mean, if it weren’t for the hurricanes we might move there! Sand. Water. Sea food. Palm trees. Freedom. What else do you need? More importantly, what does this have to do with this coming Sunday? Absolutely nothing. Or does it? You see, this coming Sunday is Palm Sunday. The day that Jesus headed into Jerusalem to start the Passion Week and finish what He came to do on earth: die for us. As He was riding in, the people cut palm branches and laid them […]
