“Be afraid. Be very afraid.”

Posted on

Wait. Somebody is telling me to be afraid? No problem! Am I the only one? Fear seems to be a big deal in our culture. We seem to extol people who conquer their fears and cajole those that don’t. Yet at the same time, we have an entire segment of the movie and TV industry dedicated to trying to scare us. Y’all already know how I feel about that. Fear can destroy us. It can destroy our relationships. Our futures. And we all deal with it. All of us. Some people face their fears head on. Others look for ways […]

34: Woes

2019-07-28 Jesus in the real world 34: Woes Luke 11:37-54 Have you “lost that lovin’ feelin’?” A. The difference between a Pharisee and a lawyer: But both Pharisees and lawyers abused their authority, taking and twisting God’s truth for their own ends. 37 While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside […]

“Hi. I’m Jason, and I’m a…”

There’s an old Bible word that’s making a comeback in our culture today. It’s being thrown around quite a bit. Christians sometimes lob it at each other, and many non-Christians also enjoy wielding it like Thor’s hammer on God’s people. When it is convenient during arguments over many different issues, the word gets cast to try and end the argument. What is this seemingly powerful word, you ask? Pharisee. Yes, even non-Christians know that a Pharisee is not a good person. But just what is a Pharisee, and what does that have to do with us? The short answer can […]

33: Signs, seekers, and sight

2019-07-21 Jesus in the real world 33: Signs, seekers, and sight Luke 11:27-36 27 As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” 29 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah […]

“Bang your head carefully”

When we lived in the Mainland, we often encountered many interesting signs. One of my favorite and often seen signs hung near low doors and stairwells around the country. It read: “小心碰头” in Chinese, with various translations into English. One of my favorite English translations read: “Bang your head carefully.” The goal of the signs was to help taller people like me protect ourselves from hitting our heads, but I think something got lost in translation. As a taller person in a land of irregular door frames, I had to be vigilant about “watching my head.” My problem is that […]

2019-07-14 Jesus in the real world 32: War Luke 11:14-26 14 Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” 16 while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom […]

A house divided

Posted on

It is reported that when Abraham Lincoln was running for Senate in 1858, he recognized the huge division facing the young United States. In a speech accepting his party’s nomination he referenced the passage we’ll be studying this coming Sunday. In that speech he said: “A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free.” Most people have heard the phrase “a house divided cannot stand.” Over 160 years later it still seems like our nation hasn’t learned to apply this truth from God’s word. In our nation and around our […]
