How much are you worth?

Posted on

The question is everywhere. Sometimes it is open and obvious. Other times a little more subtle. But it comes at each one of us constantly: “How much are you worth?” Financial planners want to help you increase your net worth. Educators want to help you improve your earning power. Even politicians want your one vote to count for them. There are so many ways our society and our world try to define how much we’re worth. And almost every one of them leave us looking at the wrong standards to make faulty value judgements. Enter Jesus. The Creator of this […]

What’s the bottom line?

By now most of y’all are aware of the fact that we’re by necessity now looking for a new vehicle for our family. We’ve been a bit overwhelmed by all the factors and decisions we must make in order to buy reliable transportation. So. Many. Questions! Should we buy something new or used? Low mileage and more expensive, or high mileage and cheaper? We have to get something for all six of us. What kind of vehicle will be best? A minivan? An SUV? A “big ‘ol pickup?” A ten-seater “home school wagon?” What will haul all of us and […]

Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. 5 And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into […]

The problem with the rat race

Posted on

Life, especially here in the US, is often compared to a rat race. He or she who gets to the cheese—the reward—first wins. And so we race. We struggle. We try to get ahead. Get noticed by our bosses. Put in extra hours. Look for career advancement and better job opportunities. We tear frantically through our mazes in search of our “cheese.” And along with this race for our “cheese,” we look for better cars in order to get there. Bigger houses. More perks. We even have designer coffee to keep us pumped up so we can keep chasing our […]

2019-09-08 Jesus in the real world 39: Kingdom Membership, part 2 Luke 13:18-35 18 He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.” 20 And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was […]

“Where do I sign up?”

Posted on

So we’ve started talking about what it means to be part of God’s Kingdom. Last week we saw that in order to get in we need to make a big “u turn” in life and start seeing Jesus produce His fruit in us. We saw that the only way for us to get straightened out is for Jesus to put His hands on us. This is all really good news. But how do we know when all of this is happening? How can we tell if His Kingdom is actually coming? And personally (and no less importantly), how do we […]

2019-09-01 Jesus in the real world 38: Kingdom Membership, part 1 Luke 13:1-17 1 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the […]
