To whom are you giving thanks?

Thanksgiving is always a good opportunity to point people to Jesus. How, you ask? By asking people a few simple questions: What are you doing for Thanksgiving? What are you thankful for this year? To Whom are you giving thanks? Of course, there are other points in our conversations along the way, but you get the idea. We also need to be ready to answer those questions for ourselves! I’ve often joked that the Atheists among us shouldn’t get to celebrate Thanksgiving (or any of the other holidays), because they have no one to thank. But we do! By God’s […]

Back when we first moved to China, we had lots of challenges. We didn’t really blend in. We didn’t understand the culture. We had trouble crossing the street without causing traffic accidents. We ate strange food. But by far the biggest challenge was simply communicating. Most people couldn’t understand us. And we certainly couldn’t understand them! No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One […]

Open the eyes of my heart Lord…

Some songs just grab you. Take over you. Come into your mind in good times or in bad. These are the kinds of songs that you connect with on a spiritual level. Songs that bring joy. Songs that bring tears. Songs that comfort you or inspire you. For me, one of those songs was written by Paul Baloche in 1997 and made popular by Michael W Smith in around 2001. And it moves me each time I hear it or sing it. Here are some of the lyrics: Open the eyes of my heart, Lord Open the eyes of my […]

2019-11-03 Jesus in the real world 47: How to be with Jesus part 1 (of 3) Luke 18:1-17 1 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4 For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet […]
