Was it worth it?

Life is hard. Sometimes it is harder than others. Whenever we suffer setbacks or opposition, it becomes easy to question the value of our efforts. Usually if we’ll keep at it, we’ll be able to look back and see that the hard work pays off.   I remember a season of struggle when I was trying to finish seminary. I had to read about 1000 pages per week and write many papers. And since I was also working full time to try and keep our support costs down, I had to get up no later than 4:30 every morning and put […]

Succeeding at the wrong things

In our current sermon series, we’re studying churches in Revelation to understand how we should live and should not live while we wait for the Lord’s return. This coming Sunday we’ll look at the church in Ephesus. This church was wildly successful by all outward appearances. And yet the Lord Jesus rebuked them. Why? Because it is possible to be successful at the wrong things. Just what are those wrong things, and what are the right things we should be pursuing?  Please join us in person on Sunday at 9:30 for English or 11 for Chinese to hear more! If you can’t make […]

Can I quote you on that?

People are saying some pretty crazy things these days. Some of it is absolutely unbelievable! We have video and audio recordings that prove many of these outlandish statements. But when those recordings aren’t available, we have to have a way to remember what was said.  When reporters do interviews, they often ask the interviewee: “Can I quote you on that?” They want to know whether or not a statement is “on the record” or “off the record.”  Writing things down is important. Especially if we want to get the words down accurately, and do something about them later.  This Sunday we’ll see John hear a […]

He’s a little off

“He’s a little off.” This phrase has multiple meanings. My favorite use means that “he’s not completely sane or stable.” Maybe I like that one so much, because it has been said about me! But as we think about the phrase, it is also instructive for us. How do we know what “sane and stable” really are? We’ve got to have a standard before we can see the deviations from that standard. And when we add in history, culture, language, and science, how do we really ever come to an agreement on what standard can be? Thankfully, the God Who created our universe […]

Now I get it!

Sometimes life just doesn’t make sense. All the mess and injustice just doesn’t seem right.  Even when we try to live as followers of Christ, sometimes it just feels like “no good deed goes unpunished.” During these seasons in life, it is easy to want to throw up your hands and walk away. Or at least say, “I just don’t get it!” So, what do we do in these situations? Psalm 73 has the answer! Please join us in person on Sunday at 9:30 for English or 11 for Chinese to hear more! If you can’t make it in person, you can still join us online […]
