A good dose of Christmas, (and this week’s sermon outline)

Posted on

Good news! We only have one month left in 2020! It has been some kind of year. But I’m glad that we’re nearing the end. It seems to me like we all need a good dose of Christmas. Not just extra food, or presents, or lots of parties. It looks like we can’t do many of those things anyway. What we need is a fresh dose of the deeper truth behind all the trappings. We need the hope, joy, freedom, and peace that only the Christ of Christmas can bring.  That’s the plan that we’ll pursue during four sermons over […]

Baby Jesus, our King

Posted on

Christmas is just one week away! Can you believe it? It is easy to think about baby Jesus during this time of year. Unfortunately, that’s where many people leave Him—a helpless baby. Powerless to do anything in their lives. Last week as we studied the triumphal entry, we took a closer look at who Jesus is: prophet, priest and king. We saw all creation worship Him as King. And we saw Him as the final and best prophet from God as well as our great high priest. As we look at another part of the Christmas story this week from […]

Of donkeys, stones, and the King of Kings

Posted on

Last week I made a joke in the sermon about a donkey. Some of y’all got it. Some of y’all didn’t. And that’s okay. The donkey doesn’t care. Donkeys don’t care about a lot of things. But donkeys know why they are here. Donkeys are also stronger than they look. They can carry heavy loads and go long distances. They know how to work hard. But they can be stubborn at times. Just like us! Even though donkeys were created to work hard, they can get off track and not fulfill their purpose. Just like us! Everything has a purpose. […]

Waiting

Silence. For more than 400 years between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament, God’s people heard nothing from Him. No prophets came on the scene to correct them. No one came forward to bring hope or encouragement to “press on to know the Lord.” There was just silence. Silence and waiting. God’s people didn’t live very well while they waited. They added lots of new rules and regulations about how they should live, but they didn’t go about the business of telling others about how great God is. And in their legalism and […]

We interrupt this season to bring you Christmas

Posted on

It often feels like life is what happens between the interruptions. And let’s face it, there are often more interruptions than life! These interruptions can be huge or minor. Plans change. Bodies get sick. Loved ones die. Work schedules change. People drop by unannounced. You run out of toilet paper at the wrong time. I confess that interruptions often annoy me, because I am engrossed in “my” time or on “my” schedule, and when that schedule fills up the interruptions annoy me all the more. “Don’t these people know how busy I am?” “Who passed these germs on to me?” […]

Waiting

Waiting How many of y’all are waiting on something? Or someone? You’re doing what you can to faithfully follow the Lord, and you believe you’ve heard from Him that something new is on the horizon of your life, but you’re just…waiting. Last week, through the lives of unborn John, Elizabeth, and Mary we saw that worship is always and only the proper response to Jesus. Even when we’re waiting. We saw Mary worship and magnify the Lord with all that she was, and we reminded ourselves that if we want to magnify the Lord, it starts by focusing on Him, […]

A big deal

A big deal What do you make a big deal about? What captivates your time, thoughts, and actions? If you know me at all, you know that I make a big deal about Alabama football. Even though we’re in Tucson now, my Crimson Tide will always be my favorite football team. I invest time and energy reading, watching, and cheering for my team. The Crimson Tide is a big deal to me! We all have many things that are a big deal to us. Work. Family. Hobbies. Friends. Vacations. Holidays. Lots of things. We make a big deal about what’s […]

Psst!

Psst!   You! Yes you! Come here. No, over here. Listen for a minute! I’ve got good news for you! No, really! I don’t have the wrong person. There hasn’t been a mistake. I’ve got really good news for you! You matter! You’re necessary! And I’ve got a really big message that you need to hear! And then share! No. I’m sure I don’t have the wrong person. Trust me! This is a really big deal!   This Sunday, during our 11AM combined service we’ll see how a visit, a message, and a response changed our world forever. We’ll also […]
