Locked doors

Revelation 3:20 is one of the most famous Bible verses that we often incorrectly associate with evangelism:  “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” The interesting thing about this verse is the context. It was written to warn believers who had drifted away from a close relationship with the Lord. The Lord Jesus desires to be with us. But sometimes, we drift away. Sometimes we lock the doors of our hearts and lives, and we don’t let Him […]

But it might be a train

Posted on

“I can see a light at the end of the tunnel, but it might be a train!” How many of y’all have ever felt this way? How many of y’all are feeling this way about life in 2020 right now?  It could be very easy to assume that nothing is going to change. That “normal” will never be the same again. And when we start thinking this way, it becomes very easy to lose hope! But we can’t. We can’t live without hope.  Even in the face of grief or suffering or sickness or hardship. Even in the face of […]

“Well it’s just 2020”

Posted on

I saw a meme the other day that said that “2020” is going to be the new buzzword when anything goes wrong. Car broke down? “That’s so 2020!” Trouble at work? “That’s so 2020!” Relationship not working out? “2020!” Stress eating? “2020!” Whatever happens, we’re tempted to just say “2020” and move on. But we can’t. Not if we want to survive. Every time we take another hit without processing through it, sooner or later it will come back to haunt us. Grief is a very real and very deadly thing. And if we don’t process through it, it’s like putting another rock in a backpack […]

I just wanna be a sheep

Posted on

There’s an old children’s song that I’ve mentioned before that is stuck in my head once again this week: I just wanna be a sheep Bah bah bah bah I just wanna be a sheep Bah bah bah bah Because His love is deep I just wanna be a sheep What a strange song! Who in the world would want to be a sheep? They’re helpless. They not too bright. And they would melt in our Tucson summer. Why would anyone want to be a sheep? The song tells us why: “Because His love is deep!” This Sunday we’re going […]

Revelation

Posted on

There’s a funny meme making its way through the internet. A woman is looking in a certain direction. And the caption states:  “Me looking outside to see which chapter of Revelation we’re on today.” Maybe you feel that way too? Like we’re neck-deep in the end times? If so, believer, remember what we saw as we studied Luke: “Straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near (21:28).” This Sunday as we look at Psalm 19, we’re going to look at a couple of different revelations. We’ll see how our loving God communicates to every person on […]

“Stupid is as stupid does,” and coronavirus reopening update

Posted on

We’re continuing our Forrest Gump blog theme for another week. And this quote is one of my favorites: “mamma always said, stupid is as stupid does!”  Using this definition, I can be pretty stupid. I do all kinds of stupid things. Hopefully less now that I’m older. But still…I have more than enough “stupid” left in me! How about you? Well, I have good news for all of us. We don’t have to live “stupid.” We can learn to leave behind many of these stupid, foolish, behaviors and grow up to look more like Jesus! This week we’re going to […]
